ANNOUNCING THE RELEASE OF THE MISCKIT VERSION 2.0.1

Update to Kit of Free Objective-C Objects Is Now Available

PROVO, UT, August 28, 1996 -- The next release of the OPENSTEP MiscKit has been made publically available. The MiscKit may be obtained via ftp to the following site:

ftp://ftp.thoughtport.com/pub/next/misckit/MiscKit2.0.1.s.gnutar.gz

If you prefer, you may point your WWW browser at:

http://www.yacktman.com/misckit/index.html

The thoughtport.com site always has the most recent official MiscKit distribution available in /pub/next/misckit and older versions are archived in /pub/next/misckit/old.

This update contains new versions of nearly all of the objects that actually (sort of) worked in the previous release. If you are working with the OPENSTEP MiscKit, this release will be much more useful than the previous release. Be aware, however, that all previous warnings still apply to this version of the kit!

This MiscKit release is special in that it is almost useless to developers using the MiscKit. That may sound like a joke, but it isn't. This release contains ONLY a few basic projects that show how the OPENSTEP kit will eventually be laid out. It does NOT have everything converted yet, though the entire kit has been run through the OPENSTEP conversion scripts. This release is being made so that those interested in participating in the port can pick it up, see what needs to be done, and pitch in.

If you are hoping to use this in a project, you will be sorely disappointed with the state and useability of this release, and should not pick it up. If you want to help in the porting effort, then pick it up and dig in! We can use help from everyone who wants to pitch in.

Since a press release is too short to give detailed information, please read the OPENSTEP MiscKit FAQ at:

http://www.misckit.com/faq/openstep.html

An HTML version of the README file for this release, which gives more specific information about the new MiscKit, is located at:

http://www.misckit.com/about/READMEs/MK.2.0.1.html

Although the current state of the OPENSTEP kit, to quote Don, "is pathetic", Don is also quite confident that this kit will become useful very quickly once everyone has had a full opportunity to pitch in and help move it along. New release frequencies while the OPENSTEP port continues are expected to happen every 2-3 weeks.

For those still using the regular MiscKit, MiscKit 1.8.0 is due out before the end of August. An announcement will be posted here when it is ready.
